On Nov. 6, Florida State University President John Thrasher announced he is imposing an indefinite suspension on all fraternities and sororities at FSU effective immediately.

On Nov. 3, Andrew Coffey, a 20-year-old pledge at Pi Kappa Phi, was found unresponsive after attending a party the night before. Three days later, Garret John Marcy, a 20-year-old member of Phi Delta Theta, was arrested for the sale and trafficking of cocaine, thus pushing the suspension.

“For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university,” said Thrasher. “There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

During the indefinite suspension, sorority and fraternity chapters will be prohibited from: holding new member events, chapter events such as socials, council or chapter meetings, chapter organized tailgates, retreats, philanthropy, intramurals, organized participation in Homecoming and organized participation in Market Wednesday.

The ban has caused all sorts of feedback from people inside and out of the Greek community.

“It is tragic that someone lost their life, but one’s personal decisions shouldn’t reflect on behalf of all Greek life,” said Jupiter High School junior Elizabeth Flanary.

FSU freshman Lila Pullo, who was supposed to be inducted into the Delta Gamma sorority, also finds the suspension unfair.

“Most of the organizations getting in trouble are fraternities,” Pullo told ABC News. “For me and a lot of the people who are entering, we’re all pretty upset because we are trying to get the reputation back up,”

However, FSU student Abygail Stiekman felt the action was necessary in order to prevent tragedies as such from happening again.

“I think hazing is a problem and alcohol is the basis of a lot of their events,” said Stiekman.
