On Nov. 27, Prince Harry of Wales and American actress Meghan Markle announced their engagement.

The couple have been happily dating since Oct. 2016 and are set to tie the knot in the spring of 2018 at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Prince Harry designed the diamond engagement ring with two stones from his deceased mother, Princess Diana’s, jewelry collection.

Markle’s own mother and father commented on the royal couple’s engagement.

“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together,” Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland said to Clarence House.

Many people have called attention to the unorthodox engagement: Markle is not a British citizen, and she has been married before, resulting in divorce.

One cannot help but be reminded of the scandal of King Edward VIII, who married American Wallis Simpson, a two time divorcée. Edward had to give the crown up to younger brother King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, as the Church of England refused to allow them to marry.

In addition, Markle is half African American, a first in a predominantly white British Royal family.

Royal weddings are known to be extremely elaborate and highly discussed. When Harry’s parents, Diana and Prince Charles wed in 1981, a ceremony was held that is often referred to as “the wedding of the century.” Broadcast globally, it was viewed by 750 million people, and a national holiday was declared. Prince Harry’s fellow royal brother, Prince William had his own extravagant wedding with Kate Middleton back on April 29, 2011. The couple is currently expecting their third child in April 2018, who will join siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

“William and I are absolutely thrilled. It’s such exciting news. It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and may they enjoy this happy moment,” Middelton said about Prince Harry and Markle’s engagement.

Brits, Americans and people all over the world are enthusiastically awaiting this highly-publicized event and are anticipating a wedding to rival past royal’s.
