Spring training is a big deal for South Florida, both culturally and economically. The two stadiums in our area—Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter and The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach—host the St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals and the defending World Series Champions, Houston Astros.

Theme parks aren’t the only thing responsible for Fla.’s tourism revenue, according to the Florida Sports Foundation; spring training brings in $753 million per year. Many Astros fans have travelled from all over the country to watch the champions play at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. And the increased tourism is bringing all kinds of money to local restaurants, hotels and businesses.

“I just moved here from Houston, and we’re huge Astros fans. My cousins from Houston just came down this past weekend to go to a game. It’s pretty cool how we have a little bit of Houston in our new home,” junior Carson Brooks said.

It’s not uncommon to see the MLB players strolling around West Palm Beach and Jupiter. Senior Coy Mawhorr snapped a picture with the Nationals’ right fielder, Bryce Harper, at the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens. Junior Juliette Day saw the Astros’ second baseman, Jose Altuve, at Chipotle on PGA Blvd.

“It was so cool being able to see such big names in baseball casually walking around our town,” Mawhorr said.

Spring training ticket prices range anywhere from $50 to $111 depending on proximity to the field.
