On March 6, the state Senate approved the Sunshine Protection Act to make daylight saving time permanent in the state of Fla. Although popular with voters, this time change could affect tourism, the economy and public safety.

The two bills, both titled the “Sunshine Protection Act,” passed in the Senate and House committees, the Miami Herald reported. The bills would exclude the state from changing its clock twice a year. Instead, daylight saving time would be the state’s time all year.

Twenty-six other states want to adopt daylight saving time year-round, including N.Y. and Mass. States like Hawaii and Arizona are currently following standard time, which means they don’t move their clocks at all. Fla. would join them by exempting themselves from the 1966 law that set a uniform time for all time zones across the country.

Removing the confusion of moving the clocks back and forth could make waking up easier. This could potentially improve driving safety by decreasing the amount of exhausted drivers. According to the Myers Psychology Textbook, the Monday after “spring forward” compared to the Monday before (1986 -1995) showed 17 percent increase in traffic-related deaths. Also, the Monday after “fall back” compared to Monday before (1986 -1995) showed a three percent decrease in traffic deaths.

Contrary to popular belief, daylight saving time is not saving any time or money for farmers.

“Despite the persistent belief that the time change benefits agriculture workers, farmers have often been leaders in the opposition, since it means a shift to schedules for partners like markets and suppliers, and disrupts the habits of livestock unaccustomed to being milked or fed an hour earlier,” according to National Geographic.

Fla., with the exception of the panhandle, would move from Eastern Standard Time to Atlantic Standard Time which is the zone that’s home to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Canadian Maritime provinces. The western part of the state’s panhandle is currently on Central Standard Time; residents there would shift to Eastern Standard Time.

The 858 “Sunshine Protection Act” bill passed unanimously through three Senate committees and in a 33-2 vote in the full Senate on Tuesday, March 6. It passed 103-11 in the House. Two Palm Beach County lawmakers voted against it: Rep. Rick Roth, R-Loxahatchee, and Sen. Bobby Powell, D-West Palm Beach. Neither returned phone calls or emails for comment according to the Palm Beach Post.
