Justin Gallegos, a runner attending the University of Oregon, became the first professional athlete with Cerebral Palsy to sign with Nike.

Cerebral Palsy is a condition marked by impaired muscle coordination typically caused by damage to the brain at or before birth.

On Oct. 6, Gallegos was joined by a camera crew, his teammates and John Douglass, Nike’s Insights Director, who informed him of the deal. This occurred on Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, which made the deal even more special to him. When he received the news, he collapsed with joy as the crowd surrounding him applauded for him.

Gallegos began running as a high school freshman in CA and chose to run at the University of Oregon because one of his coaches had attended there and was a great inspiration to him.

“I was once a kid with leg braces who could barely put one foot in front of the other!” Gallegos wrote on Instagram. “Now I have signed a three-year deal with Nike Running!”

Nike developed a specific running shoe for those with disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy that has a zippered heel. This is a wraparound zipper system that lets people peel open the shoe with one hand, slipping their foot in with ease. It should make life a little bit easier for people who have physical difficulties.
