Students spent their lunch period listening to Ms. Pinder speak about turtle nesting patterns.

Jupiter High’s Green Schools Club meets every Monday during lunch in room 3-108 to discuss important environmental issues. They have had two guest speakers so far this year: Jessie Pinder and Elana Axelband.

Metallic reusable straws were given to each attendee at Pinder’s lecture. She spoke to the club about the harmful effects of single-use plastic on land and water. A JHS biology teacher, she also has a part-time job documenting turtle nesting patterns. Pinder encouraged students to pick up trash and spread awareness on how to help the earth.

Axelband spoke about her new grocery store opening in Tequesta, One World-Zero Waste. Her store promotes plastic-free alternatives. Upcycled fabrics for handmade bags and organic food for healthy eating will be the featured products. “The club is basically about promoting environmental and sustainable practices within the school and beyond,” senior Annie Hernandez, club Co-President, said.

The club is active on Instagram @jhs_greenteam where they post environmental facts to incite reactions out of students and urge them to start changing their harmful lifestyle.

Some green alternatives you can start doing can be using reusable shopping bags (Publix takes back any of their plastic bags you bring in), using reusable cups and straws (bring your own cup to places like Starbucks) and shop at organic stores such as Lush.
