On Nov. 3, Ariana Grande released new single “thank u, next” and scored her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 on Nov. 17.

The catchy tune explores Grande’s past relationships and the lessons she learned from each break up. She also sings about putting herself first and taking time to heal after her hectic year. Being courteous, Grande had those mentioned in the song preview it before the release. It’s the first single released of an up-and-coming project and has already gained immense popularity.

In the beginning of the song, Grande addresses her past boyfriends by name. She first addresses rapper Big Sean who she dated for eight months in 2015. In her lyrics she sings “Thought I’d end up with Sean, but he wasn’t a match.” The two ended their relationship reportedly because of conflicting schedules.

In the next lyric, “Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh,” Grande addresses former flame and back-up dancer Ricky Alvarez who she dated briefly after her relationship with Sean ended. Grande and Alvarez dated for over a year before they ended things for unknown reasons.

Later in the song, she addresses her most recent split from comedian and Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, her former fiancé. The two began their relationship shortly after her split from rapper Mac Miller. Grande and Davidson had only been dating a few weeks before they announced their engagement. Their engagement was called off in Sept., and the break up has reportedly been messy. However, she addresses the relationship in the lyric, “Even almost got married and for Pete I’m so thankful.”

At the end of the song, Grande addresses late rapper Mac Miller who passed away on Sept. 7. “Wish I could thank Malcolm ‘cause he was an angel,” she sings. The two began their relationship in 2016 and ended things in 2018 reportedly because of Miller’s struggles with sobriety and Grande’s own personal issues after the Manchester bombings. Throughout the song, Grande repeats, “I’m so … grateful for my ex,” in the chorus.

Grande also addresses rumors surrounding her love life, like her jumping from relationship to relationship or moving too fast: “…plus, I met someone else we havin’ better discussions, I know they say I move on too fast but, this one gon’ last cause her name is Ari, and I’m so good with that.” She implies taking a break from relationships and putting herself first.

Following the release of the single, Grande broke a record for the most-streamed song in a single day on Spotify, garnering over nine million streams.
