In Oct. 2017 an unusually shaped asteroid named `Oumuamua, meaning a messenger that reaches out from the past, came close to Earth before speeding off. Now, Harvard scientists Abraham Loeb and Shmuel Bialy are wondering if `Oumuamua is an alien spaceship because of its unusual shape, color and trajectory.

“`Oumuamua deviates from a trajectory that is solely dictated by the Sun’s gravity. Moreover, comets change the period of their spin and no such change was detected for Oumuamua. The excess acceleration of `Oumuamua was detected at multiple times, ruling out an impulsive kick due to a breakup of the object. The only other explanation that comes to mind is the extra force exerted on `Oumuamua by sunlight. In order for it to be effective, `Oumuamua needs to be less than a millimeter in thickness, like a sail. This led us to suggest that it may be a light-sail produced by an alien civilization,” Loeb said in an email to the Jupiter War Cry.

`Oumuamua appears to be 400 meters long and 40 meters wide; however, Loeb is proposing the sun’s reflection may enhance the asteroid, meaning `Oumuamua may be thinner than it appears. If `Oumuamua was an asteroid, a “cometary tail” would have been visible.  Loeb believes `Oumuamua may be a lightsail, a type of sail that is pushed forward by light–a technology scientists are currently trying to create.

“I welcome other proposals, but I cannot think of another explanation for the peculiar acceleration of `Oumuamua. However, I prefer not to assign probabilities to the nature of `Oumuamua. We just need to be practical and collect more data on it or other members of its population. The interpretation of existing and future data is my plan for the future,” Loeb said.

Scientists do know `Oumuamua is from outside of the solar system, regardless of its origin. If `Oumuamua is just a hunk of space rock, it is still an exciting discovery since it gives scientists an idea of what is going on beyond the Milky Way.

“The nice thing about driftwood is that it tells you that there are trees that grow on distant shores, so this is a little tangible piece of evidence that the way planets formed and grew in our own solar system, it’s happening the same way in other solar systems far away,” Dr. Michele Bannister said.

Have no fears, if `Oumuamua is an alien piece of technology, it may be dysfunctional, as “observatories did not detect transmission,” Loeb said in his paper “On `Oumuamua.”
