On Nov. 13, former First Lady Michelle Obama released her book “Becoming,” an autobiographical memoir she describes as being a “deeply personal experience.” In the memoir, she discusses her transition from a young girl raised in the South Side of Chicago to an influential figure for women and young girls. Obama also talks about being in the public eye during the time she served as the First Lady, all while juggling work and motherhood. The book has amassed great success selling 1.4 million copies within a week of its release. It is now the bestselling book of 2018.

Currently on a 10-city book tour, Obama is sitting down and getting to know the participants on a personal level, giving them insight on personal stories not included in the book.

While in Boston, Obama made a stop at the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club. During her visit, she had an intimate conversation with the girls who read her book and felt a strong connection to Obama’s story.

“What inspires me most about today is that she took the time to meet with young girls of color and really help us, guide us a little bit, and give us the opportunity to ask questions. And allow herself [to be] sort of an anchor for us,” Nalany Guerrier, one of the participants of the Boston stop, said.

During its first day in stores, “Becoming” sold approximately 750,000 copies and, according to The Guardian, “[the book] is now selling nine copies per second.”

The content of the book is divided into three sections “Becoming Me,” “Becoming Us” and “Becoming More.”

In her book she “emphasizes how important role models are especially for young women of color in a culture that isn’t changing fast enough,” Jennifer Szalai of New York Times said.

Obama also addresses personal topics she has never discussed publicly before such as going through fertility treatments to have children. Or the miscarriage she experienced that left her with a “pang of longing followed by a bruising wallop of inadequacy.”

In wake of the death of former president George H.W. Bush, Obama canceled her Europe tour dates to attend his funeral. She announced the cancellations in an Instagram post in which she paid her respects to him.
