UPDATE: The Heisman Trophy was awarded to Kyler Murray of the University of Oklahoma on Dec. 8 at the Heisman ceremony in New York City. Murray won with 2,167 votes, followed by Tua Tagovalioa of the University of Alabama won with 1,871 votes, and Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State with 783 votes.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the best player in college football. The winner of the award is voted on by a committee of 870 voters. Last year, the winner was Baker Mayfield of the University of Oklahoma.

The 2018 Heisman finalists were Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovalioa and Dwayne Haskins of the University of Ohio State. All three candidates are quarterbacks with very impressive numbers. At first, Tagovalioa looked like the runaway Heisman winner, but in the Southeastern Conference Championship game, he struggled and was replaced by backup quarterback Jalen Hurts. Tagovalioa’s performance closed the gap for the other two finalists.

Murray is possibly the fastest quarterback in all of football, and he can throw the ball with pinpoint accuracy. Kyler averages 8.6 yards per play, the highest yards per play in college football. Murray has stepped up to the plate and carried the Sooners to the playoffs. This season, Murray has thrown for 4,053 yards total: 892 rushing yards, scoring 40 touchdowns with seven interceptions and 241 out of 340 pass attempts.

Tagovalioa, a backup quarterback last year, saved the Alabama Crimson Tide’s national championship game by replacing quarterback, Jalen Hurts, when he was struggling to throw the ball. Tagovalioa went into the game and lit up the Georgia Bulldogs’ secondary, winning the game 26-23. However, in the SEC Championship game, at the end of the first half, the score was 21-14 in favor of Georgia.

Tagovlioa threw for 3,358 yards: completing 199 of 294 attempts of throwing and scoring 37 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Tagovlia transformed the usually defensively dominant Alabama team, in a team strong offensively and defensively.

Haskins has broken many Ohio State and Big 10 records, this season threw for 4,580 yards: 348 on 496 attempts, scoring 47 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Despite stats that seem to be better than the other two finalists, he has thrown the ball over 150 times more than Murray, which is why he lags behind. Haskins is also not as explosive as the other two finalists but still is a Heisman-worthy player.
