On Feb. 14, nine members of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Louisiana State University were arrested for the hazing of students rushing to be a part of the fraternity.

According to nbcnews.com, the pledges were forced to play a game called “Edward 40 Hands,” where 40-ounce bottles of beer were taped to someone’s hands, and the pledges were forced to finish both bottles while in a plank position on their elbows.

According to the police report, the nine fraternity members in charge of the hazing poured gas on the pledges, forced them to stay in an ice machine for 45 minutes, burned them with cigarettes, beat them with a pipe, made them lay in broken glass, kicked them with steel-toed boots, urinated on them and made them take cayenne pepper showers.

Fraternity members face a string of charges. Cade Duckworth is facing charges of battery, false imprisonment and three misdemeanor counts of criminal hazing. Gaston Eymard, Shakti Gilotra and Malcolm McNiece are facing charges of battery and criminal hazing. Charles Brakenridge, Joseph Harkrider, Blake Chalin, Alexander Rozas and Garrett Sanders were charged with criminal hazing.

“The quick action by the national DKE organization by revoking the chapter’s charter and the cooperation of several witnesses in this investigation demonstrate a growing recognition that hazing and other harmful activities cannot be tolerated,” university spokesperson Jason Droddy said in a statement.

In Sept. 2017, 18-year-old-freshman Maxwell Gruver died during a hazing-related drinking ritual in the fraternity Phi Delta Theta at LSU, according to wwltv.com. His blood alcohol content was six times higher than the legal limit for driving.

LSU President, F. King Alexander, said hazing will not be tolerated on campus in a statement he released on Feb. 15.
