Sabrina Carpenter, pop singer and actress, is widely well known for her sarcastic, playful and witty pop music. With the release of her record breaking newest album, “Short n’ Sweet” it seems like fans just can’t get enough of the new popstar. However, she’s not new to popularity. Carpenter’s fame came to rise 10 years ago– in the 2014 hit Disney show “Girl Meets World”. Carpenter starred as ‘Maya Hart’, one of the lead characters throughout the 3 seasons of the show.
“I’ve watched her [Carpenter] since Girl Meets world and followed her throughout her career. She was my favorite on Girl Meets World,” Ava Christie, sophomore, said.
However, most of her fans came to know her due to the song “Espresso”. “Espresso” became known as the “No.1 Global Song of the Summer” for 2024 by Billboard after its consistent reign of the top global charts song for all 14 weeks of summer.
Carpenter’s first #1 album titled “Short n’ Sweet” came out on August 23rd, 2024. The album features 12 tracks, including the two hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”. Clearly a fan favorite, “Please Please Please” was Carpenter’s second single that topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“I like the way the music is produced, like the topics of the songs. The songs can be really sad—the lyrics are amazing, but the way the music is produced transformers the way it sounds in itself. “Sharpest Tool” is a sad song, but the way it’s produced makes it sound not sad,” Bella Venanzi, senior, said.
The overwhelming response to Carpenter’s two singles brought major anticipation to the album. Upon release, “Short n’ Sweet” quickly rose to the top of over 14 countries’ record charts upon release.
“I think [Short n Sweet] is really good. I like the marketing for it, I love the aesthetic around it. And I also love the style the album was done in, I think it really matches the vibe of this year so far,” Ava Scotten, junior, said.
“Short n Sweet” is a 10/10. Totally recommend. My favorite song is Slim Pickins because of her super high riffs and vocals, and it’s witty. Her play on words are really good,” Kate Whitley, junior, said.
There are three tracks on the album that contain a music video: “Espresso”, “Please Please Please” and “Taste”. Each video amasses together over 312 million views. “Please Please Please” was written about Barry Keoghan, Carpenter’s current boyfriend and Irish actor. The music video features Keoghan and amassed 1.8 million likes on YouTube. The newest of Carpenter’s music videos is “Taste” which features actress Jenna Ortega.
“I think the music videos make some of the songs like that much better, because the image of the album is so obvious. She put so much effort into making sure it was exactly what she wanted and making sure it fit a certain story,” Scotten said.
Carpenter has recently had her top three hits at top three in Billboard’s Hot 100 songs. Because of Carpenter’s hot hits, she ended up breaking a Billboard record that has not been broken since the 1960s by the Beatles.
Many theorists think that a contributing factor to the increase in popularity of Carpenter is due to her overall aesthetic. Carpenter uses light pastel colors, lace, boots, mini skirts, dresses, off the shoulder cuts and a glittery feminine pop star style. She has a new signature hair look with blonde curtain bangs and a blowout which may be related to the “Hollywood Hair Theory”— a theory that you won’t be famous until you have a signature hair look people can recognize you by.
“I think that she’s bringing pop princess back and I’m all here for it,” Venanzi said.
