Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) is a golf tournament which combines traditional golf with simulated indoor golf. The league was founded by famous golfers Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Mike McCarley.
The PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of America) TOUR is a non-profit organization in the United States that organizes a series of tournaments all over the country. The TGL split 24 of the top PGA TOUR stars into six teams with four players on each team.
The TGL has six teams: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club.
“Six TGL teams representing six different cities go head-to-head in a season-long competition at SoFi Center, a first-of-its-kind venue built specifically for TGL on the campus of Palm Beach State College. Matches air on ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) and ESPN+ in the U.S. with every shot live and all the players mic’d up, bringing unprecedented access to the competition for golf fans,” the TGL website said.
Jupiter is also very close to the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where all the TGL matches are held. Also, out of the selected locations to have a team for the TGL, they decided to have Jupiter, FL, represent a team.
On Aug. 24, 2022, the league’s three founders and the PGA Tour announced the creation of TGL, but the league didn’t officially start until Jan. 7, 2024.
“Combining simulator golf with traditional golf is fine, but I think they need to keep a balance in between them. I feel like they also need to keep the major golf tournaments in traditional golf,” Sarah Earle, freshman on the JHS golf team, said.
Since the league was announced, it has drawn in much attention to celebrities like Steve Cohen, Arthur Blank and Marc Lasry, who decided they wanted to invest in the organization.
Besides having investors, each team is owned by popular celebrities and athletes like Serena Williams and Stephen Curry.
TGL decided to bring in celebrities and athletes to take up ownership of the six teams to help with publicity, engagement and credibility. Having a celebrity as the “owner” of a team will attract an audience and make viewers more excited and interested in watching the games.
“I’ve been to a TGL game and it was so much fun and I also think having celebrity athletes own one of the teams is a great way to promote the TGL,” Earle said.
Tickets can be directly purchased from Ticketmaster, with prices varying, and single-match tickets are priced at $160.
The organization does offer seasonal tickets, which have benefits such as complimentary parking, tickets to all 15 regular season matches and all playoff matches, a season gift package, pre-match on-field access and behind-the-scenes tours during select dates and membership-specific special events and offers.
“The two types of golf are totally different, but both are entertaining, so it will be interesting to see if TGL lasts for several years,” Bruce Wasserman, JHS boys head golf coach, said.
As of Feb. 25, Atlanta Drive, The Bay and Los Angeles Golf Club have secured a spot to compete in the semifinals, but it leaves one spot open for grabs for New York, Boston and Jupiter.
“I think the Bay Area team will win because I like their combination of players in this format,” Wasserman said.
The TGL semi-finals are on March 17, at 7 p.m. and March 18, at 7 p.m. For the finals series, there will typically be two matches. Match one will be on March 24, at 9 p.m. and match two will be on March 25, at 7 p.m. All the matches will be aired on ESPN.
