The Netflix original series, “Adolescence”, premiering in early Mar., had 13 nominations at the Emmy Awards on Sep. 14, 2025, being awarded a total of 8.
The Emmys are awards given annually made to recognize achievements and milestones within the television and entertainment industry.
15 year old Owen Cooper, playing the protagonist role of Jamie Miller, became the youngest male to win an Emmy- Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. This was Cooper’s professional acting career debut.
“His [Cooper’s] acting was really good, compared to some other shows I’ve seen, he definitely deserves this [Emmy win],” Elin Sawyer, sophomore, said. “I know he is very popular right now and I think he will go far.”
Much of the positive feedback regarding “Adolescence” has been directed towards Cooper and his performance throughout the show.
“I think this being his [Cooper’s] first role really shows how phenomenal of an actor he will become in future projects since his acting conveyed such raw and complex emotions through not only the prosody of his lines but his body language,” Cora Boschen, sophomore, said.
The series consists of four, 50-65 minute episodes, each filmed in one uninterrupted shot. With such a deep and complex concept and this different filming style, Cooper portrayed his character in such a way which made the audience feel connected to the show.
“I loved the filming style of each episode, being filmed in one continuous take, because I think it emphasized the realism of the situation and makes viewers feel embedded in the story as they watch it play out,” Boschen said.
The one-shot filming style shown in “Adolescence” has started to become an interest in filmmaking in recent years. This style of filming is what drew many viewers into the film.
Actor and co-creator of “Adolescence”, Stephen Graham, playing the role of Eddie Miller, won a total of 3 Emmys, including, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthropology Series or Movie, Outstanding writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Adolescence as a whole won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie was awarded to Mathew Lewis for his production of “Adolescence”. This award has everything to do with film making and the production of a show or movie.
Other “Adolescence” cast members, specifically Erin Dougherty and crew members won various other awards for the filmmaking, production and acting of “Adolescence”.
“Adolescence” explores the many struggles that young people go through, such as the effect of social media, along with shining light on real life issues.
“I would highly recommend this show to others because it reveals things about human nature in such an easy way to understand since you can see the physiological aspects of Jamie’s character revealed and analyzed directly in the show,” Boshen said.
