Making its debut in 1927, the Ryder Cup is a biyearly golf tournament of two opposing teams, Team United States and Team Europe, both with 12 golfers.
This year the infamous tournament took place on the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, and occurred on Sept. 26 through 28
2025 marks the 45th Ryder Cup, which has a complex history and a bond between the United States (US) and Europe.
“An American golfer had never won the British Open, an observation made by journalist James D. Harnett of Golf Illustrated. Harnett wrote a letter to the PGA of America suggesting that they send American golfers to compete in matches overseas, proposing a golfers’ fund to raise money for the travel costs,” an article by EBSCO, said
This letter has created an immense impact on the modern world of professional golf. It established what is now the Ryder Cup tournament which streams to millions of people across the world.
“Live coverage of the 45th Ryder Cup helped draw in the biggest ever weekend audience in Sky Sports’ history, as 8.8 million viewers tuned in,” Golf Business News, said.
Fans had high hopes that USA would take the lead in the beginning matches and to their surprise the outcome was quite different.
“The game took place in New York and everyone thought the USA was going to win. The first two days, team USA played really badly and they were down a ton,” Jordan Reyes, Junior, varsity golf team member, said.
The first half of the game had team United States (US) fans at the edge of their seats, hopeful that their team would still secure the winning spot.
“Europe won three of the four morning matches in foursome play and two of the four afternoon four-ball matches to take a 5.5 to 2.5 lead over the team from the United States on Friday, Sept. 26,” an article from USA Today, said.
With Europe in the lead, tensions were high and anticipation was skyrocketing.
“My family’s very sport orientated so we were mainly discussing how poorly team USA was playing and that we thought team USA was a bit too confident going into it,” Reyes said.
Not only were tensions high with viewers, but also with the athletes themselves.
“On the 15th green, tempers flared when Greg Bodine, Bryson DeChambeau’s caddie, allegedly stepped into Justin Rose’s putting line. Rose voiced his frustration but sank the putt anyway,” Golf Week said
Golf is more than just your performance on the green, it’s a calm state of mind, so instances where emotions take over tend to occasionally happen.
“It’s a lot of mental games, when you make mistakes you have to learn how to come back from them,” Andrew Plum, Jupiter golfer Junior, said.
By the end of the game the winner was clear, Europe was soon to win first place.
“Tyrrell Hatton then added another half in the penultimate match to ensure an outright, 15-13 victory,” The New York Times, Athletic said.
In the 2025 Ryder Cup, Europe won first prize and took home the gold Ryder Cup Trophy.
Some fans say increasing overall broadcasting of this major league golf tournament will popularize golf and create an opportunity for more people to tune in.
“Most of my friends are getting into golf after watching the Ryder Cup, I also think a lot of people nationally throughout the world will begin to watch golf because of this,” Plum, said.
