Jupiter’s journalism pumpkin contest creates bonds

Jupiter High’s War Cry staff and Chieftain Yearbook staff held their annual pumpkin decorating contest from Oct. 25 – Oct. 29 and War Cry took first placed first.

This was the fifth year they had their competition and War Cry has won every year since the beginning.

War Cry’s first place pumpkin was a “Star Wars” themed pumpkin by juniors Emily Jacox and Kierstyn Fisher. “Winning this pumpkin contest means me and Emily are the best of the best,” Fisher said.

The contest builds connections within the two staffs as they take their skills from designing and writing newspapers and yearbooks to creative pumpkins.

“The best part about the contest was being able to use that creative artistic side and being able to bond with other classmates to get to know each other more,” Olivia Gilbert, sophomore, said.

Staffers enjoy this competition as it gets them into the fun spirit of Halloween.

“Painting in the War Cry room when everyone was working on their pumpkins was just great, it was just great Halloween energy,” Jason Doubler, senior, said.

Dobuler expressed his opinions on War Cry’s win.

“War Cry is better, there’s no debate. The stats are there and we have won the last five competitions,” Dobuler said.

A yearbook staffer commented on War Cry’s winning streak.

“Definitely War Cry is better because they have beaten us every single time, I think it is just that they have more creative people,” Nina Torres, junior, said.

Yearbook’s take on decorating pumpkins is more about having fun than the competitive part.

“Yearbook was better because we didn’t take it seriously and we just had fun with it,” Alex Edwards, junior, said

The Yearbook staff’s winning pumpkins were “Mrs. Muncy’s Family” by seniors, Abby Krall, Courtney Capar, and Tasnim Farhat.

“This was my first year winning and it was just so funny to do Muncy’s family. Abby threw out the idea and we just went with it,” Capar said.
