Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland and the United Kingdom.  Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Each day in February, we’re going to celebrate the achievements made by African Americans and Afro-Latinos to recognize their central role in U.S. history starting with Claudette Colvin.  While Rosa Parks is a household name with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Claudette Colvin came first.  On March 2, 1955, 15-year-old Colvin was on her way home from high school when she refused to give up her seat to a white woman and move to the back of the bus. She was handcuffed and arrested for her refusal. The incident occurred nine months prior to Parks’ famed refusal. In June 1956, Colvin was one of five plaintiffs in “Browder v. Gayle,” the first federal court case filed by a civil rights attorney that challenged bus segregation. A three-judge U.S. District Court panel determined Alabama’s bus segregation laws to be unconstitutional. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s ruling and affirmed bus segregation laws were unconstitutional.
