Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

((HARPER))

All this month we will be featuring members of the African-American and Afro-Latino communities, showcasing their achievements and accomplishments.  Today we celebrate Jane Bolin.  Jane Bolin was the first African American woman to graduate from Yale law school, and the first black woman to be appointed as a judge. In fact her own career adviser discouraged her from applying to Yale, yet she still graduated in the top 20 of her class. She served on the boards of the NAACP, the National Urban League, the City-Wide Citizens’ Committee on Harlem, and the Child Welfare League. She was an activist for children’s rights and education.

And of course, don’t forget about the girls’ lacrosse team.  They’re trying to raise money for referee fees, uniforms, field equipment and more.  Any donation is greatly appreciated.
