The Winnipeg Jets set a new National Hockey League (NHL) record on Nov. 9 with 14 out of their first 15 regular season games being won.
“It is so important to break and make new records to set a new goal for your team and expand the horizons for the team,” Marina Rivera, senior hockey fan, said.
The previous NHL record was originally set by the Ottawa Senators in the 2007-08 season with them winning 13 out of their first 15 regular season games. The Winnipeg Jets pulled off a 4-1 win against the Dallas Stars, their 14th win, breaking the record. The game was almost the third shutout in a row for Jets’ goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
“In a shutout, the team and especially the fans get a morale boost and you take pride and want to say that your goalie is the best,” Skye Borakos, sophomore hockey fan, said.
This win gave the Jets a sixth-straight win for the second time this season. The first time being an eight game long streak until they lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The only other team in NHL history to have multiple six-game win streaks through its first 15 games of a season is the Colorado Avalanche in 2013-14 season.
“This kind of record shows that the team is really giving their best and locking in to what they want, which is to win,” Shannon Alvarado-Palacios, senior hockey fan, said.
The fourth and final goal for Winnipeg was scored seven minutes and 14 seconds into the second period on the power play. Nikolaj Ehlers, left-wing, scored his ninth goal of the season with a slap shot.
After the fourth goal was scored by the Jets, the Dallas Stars switched their goalies, putting in Casey DeSmith for the remainder of the game.
“Switching goalies can benefit the team in the long run. It can also shake things up and challenge the opposing team,” Rivera said.
Dallas worked hard to put themselves on the scoreboard in the third and final period. The only goal made by Dallas was scored by Roope Hintz, center, with a tip-in.
“There’s always a way to get over your opponent, if they don’t try then they’ll never know if there was a chance for them to redeem and get back from losing,” Alvarado said.
The Winnipeg Jets are expected to further this record throughout the season and have a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs next April.
“They have implemented a solid, stronger defense, also, the goalies Connor [Hellebuyck] and Eric [Comrie] have been making crucial saves, they have been outstanding,” Alvarado said.
