Holiday Highlights: Winter Showcase

The Jupiter High Drama Club is off to a unique start this year. In the past, the club has always produced a fall play, such as “Romeo and Juliet” or “Sleepy Hollow.” This year, however, the students will be performing in a variety of musical numbers and sketches in “Holiday Highlights: A Christmas Carol with a Bunch of Unrelated Presents” on Dec.13-14 at 7 p.m. in the Jupiter High auditorium.

The show is centered around a quirky, modernized version of Charles Dicken’s classic “A Christmas Carol.” The director of the play is sophomore Ilore Cooney.

“This twist shows a disgruntled Scrooge as a teacher who gives his students an enormous homework over the Christmas Break just to be mean. [He] is then guided by the classic Christmas ghosts to see the error in his ways, ultimately leading to the student’s being freed of their work,” Cooney said.

Despite its name, the variety show is not just limited to Christmas related numbers. Large musical numbers such as “Friend Like Me” from “Aladdin,” “Step in Time” from “Mary Poppins” and “What is This Feeling” from “Wicked” are all set to be a part of the show. There will also be a several monologues, duet songs and scenes, dance numbers, a holiday sing-along, and a short skit called “Mosquito Girl.” The list is tentative so far.

“Friend Like Me” director, senior Allison Kamla, is not only excited for the Holiday Highlights performance, but is also looking forward to bringing the piece to the Thespian Districts competition, occurring Dec.1.

“The rehearsals are going great! We managed to learn the entire song in just three rehearsals because of the enthusiasm people have shown for the song,” Kamla said. “Seeing how well they’re doing has given me the confidence to take it to districts and hopefully come home with a superior!”

Tickets are available on showtix4u.com and will be sold the week before the show during lunch in the courtyard and at the box office on the day of the performance.
