President Trump and Mayor elect of NYC, Zohran Mamdani, met at the White House on Friday, Nov. 21 to discuss potential improvements to the nation’s largest city, NYC.
Despite a history of ceaseless insults between Mamdani and Trump, exchanged through social media, the two seemingly set aside their differences to discuss a shared interest– addressing NYC’s affordability crisis.
Together, they hope to transform the lives of the 8.5 million New Yorkers who are currently struggling under the cost of a living crisis, with one in four living in poverty.
“We intend to create a fair property tax system because we want a New York City that is not only fair and equitable but also one every New Yorker can afford,” Mamdani said following the conference.
Law enforcement and immigration were discussed as well and to the surprise of many, the two managed to find common ground regarding that issue as well.
“He doesn’t want to see crime and I don’t want to see crime,” President Trump said to a reporter following the conference.
President Trump expressed his support for Mamdani as mayor, even claiming that he would “absolutely” feel comfortable living in NYC under Mamdani.
“Yeah, I would, I really would. Especially after the meeting, absolutely.” President Trump said in response to a reporter. “We agree on a lot more than I would have thought. I want him to do a great job and we’ll help him do a great job,” Trump said.
Following the meeting, a reporter posed a question regarding negative comments towards President Trump made by Mamdani. In response he said“I think both President Trump and I, we are very clear about our positions and our views and what I really appreciate about the president is that the meeting that we had, focused not on places of disagreement- which there are many, but focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers.”
Though many questions asked by reporters attempted to separate the men based off of their differing views, they were quick to steer the conversation back towards its original focus.
Ultimately, despite their many differing political stances, President Trump and Mamdani have come to an agreement to work together to deliver affordability to New Yorkers. President Trump offers his support and hopes to aid Mayor Elect in his efforts to restore affordability to the people of New York City.
