Oftentimes, people listen to different types of music based on how they’re feeling. For example, people might want to listen to something upbeat when they’re happy or excited.
Everyone has their own, unique music taste, which can make it difficult to create a playlist based on a single mood or situation.
“I listen to a lot of different types of music, like pop, rap, alternative, I can really listen to anything,” Taya Winstead, freshman, said.
Listening to music based on your mood can be remedial to listen to something which mirrors how you’re currently feeling, according to the National Library of Medicine. Making playlists with different genres and types of music can make it easier to find something you can listen to without constantly skipping songs.
“Sometimes I want to listen to something like Beabadoobee because I want something more chill and relaxed, or sometimes I want to listen to something like MF DOOM because I want something I can play loudly,” Winstead said.
Listening to music with different tones can also change your mood to the mood of the song. Listening to something more tame can calm you down if you’re angry or excited.
“The iso-principle is a tool that matches a music listening experience to a current mood or emotion and then gradually shifts to music that represents a desired mood or emotion,” Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare said.
Music is often played when people are doing something like working out or driving. Some music fits these situations better than others and can even affect what you’re doing.
“When I’m studying or doing homework I like to listen to something that helps me focus rather than something that’ll distract me from what I’m trying to do,” Carlos Reyes Lopez, sophomore, said.
When you listen to music while doing certain activities, it can alter your productivity or concentration. It might be harder to get motivated when working out if you’re listening to something slow and relaxing, for instance.
“Music with a slow tempo, lacking lyrics, and exhibiting a repetitive and ambient nature can improve concentration and promote a state of calm focus,” Levine Music said.
Playlists based on your mood don’t have to be built a certain way and can be tailored perfectly to fit how you’re feeling.
“I have lots of playlists for when I feel like listening to something heavy like metal and rock, or when I feel like listening to something slower like indie and alternative rock,” Reyes Lopez said.
