Jupiter, Fla. is a coastal city mainly known for its renowned beaches, but the town has much more to offer than just sandy toes and salty hair.
Dating back to 1925, Jupiter originated as a small fishing village. The community still holds this culture today with many locals spending their time fishing and doing other beach related activities.
Some common fish that residents catch in Jupiter are Snook, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Mahi-Mahi, Grouper and Snapper.
“I know a lot of people from our school [Jupiter High School] that go to the Jupiter Inlet for snook fishing,” Ava Andrews, sophomore, Jupiter resident, said.
Just 20 minutes away from Jupiter Beach is the rural, equestrian neighborhood, Jupiter Farms.
“My favorite part about the Farms is how different it is from in town [the more populated areas of Jupiter]. I grew up riding four-wheelers and playing outside in places like Riverbend and I feel like a lot of kids aren’t able to do that,” Kaden Sparapani, Jupiter Farms Resident, junior, said.
Riverbend Park, located in The Farms, is a popular area where many locals spend their time riding bikes, kayaking and enjoying the wildlife. Alligators, birds, deer and snakes are just a few of the many animals that are inhabited in the park.
“Over the summer, me and my friends used to go to this spot in Riverbend that we called the dam and it had a rope swing over the water. We would all ride our bikes there and just swim and hangout,” Sparapani said.
Even though The Farms and the beach are just a few miles away from each other, the activities each area provides is very different.
“One of my favorite things to do here [in Jupiter] is to ride ATVs on the dirt roads or go to the beach to swim and hangout with my friends,” Kaylee Cornett, Jupiter Farms resident, sophomore, said.
Another aspect of Jupiter that makes it so unique is the diversity of people. Many residents have families that have lived here generation after generation, while others use Jupiter as a place to visit during the colder months.
Many celebrities choose to live in the sunshine state of Fla., here are a few that live in Jupiter: Michael Jordan (retired basketball player), Tiger Woods (professional golfer), Celine Dion (singer), Rorry McIlroy (professional golfer), Venus and Serena Williams (professional tennis players) and Jason Aldean (country music singer) who has a house outside of Jupiter, located in Hutchinson Island.
“I follow Jason Aldean on social media and I’ve seen him and his wife post at restaurants that I’ve been to before. I recently saw him post at Tiki-52 and I think it’s so cool we live in a place where we can randomly run into celebrities,” Andrews said.
Within the first six months of last year, Palm Beach County (PBC) broke its record for most tourists with 5.72 million visitors.
Tourism in PBC brings in approximately 10.5 billion dollars annually and supports more than 90,000 jobs.
The Jupiter Lighthouse plays a big part in the towns’ history. First lit on July 10, 1860, the lighthouse was originally built to help guide ships during the American Civil War. The lighthouse is still prominent today with educational based tours and opportunities to climb the 105 steps.
“Once you climb to the top of the lighthouse, there is a really pretty view of the intercoastal and you can see all the wildlife and trees below…I would definitely recommend it to someone visiting Jupiter,” Blakely Miller, Jupiter resident, said.
Another feature of Jupiter is the golf community. With over 145 golf courses in PBC, many locals and tourists often spend their time out on the green. A Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour event known as the Cognizant Classic is hosted at PGA National which helps contribute to why Jupiter is a favored golf destination.
“A lot of the kids at the camp I worked at attended because their parents played golf. Golf is a super popular sport in Jupiter,” Miller, golf camp volunteer, said.
Despite being a small beach town, Jupiter has many different outlooks, making it a sought-after place to call home.
“There is always something fun to do here and I think it’s a great place to live,” Cornett said.
