If you use social media, chances are you’ve seen people promoting their small businesses. Entrepreneurs, both young and old, started businesses during the COVID-19 quarantine. Since then, people have been inspired to start their own businesses, whether it’s homemade candles, jewelry or even artwork.

If you also feel inspired to turn your creative ideas into a small business, here are helpful tips to maximize your talents and make money.

Paintings and Drawings

If you like to paint or draw and can do it well, look into selling your pieces on sites like Etsy. If you’re under 18, then you’ll need to make an account under a parent or guardian, and they will have to run the shop. Before you begin, do research about what artwork is popular and how much you can price your item at.

Painters should consider stretched canvas or canvas boards; they’re best sellers and easy to ship. For drawings, use sketchbook paper, and consider upgrading your pieces with a frame and charging a bit more.

Your artwork should be eye-catching and creative. While it’s okay to use templates from online, make your artwork original. Keep in mind where you envision your piece to be. Vibrant colors can be good for bedrooms, but black-and-white or pastels are good for kitchens or living rooms.

Resin Art

Resin is a liquid material that hardens when it’s left out to cure. There are usually two types of resin: two-part and ultraviolet curing. An ultraviolet light is a must for UV curing, so the two parts are usually more popular among new creators.

Resin is a fun way to make jewelry, keychains, or even small sculptures. Make sure to use silicone molds for resin. Resin comes in clear form, but by adding mica powder to color the resin, or other items like glitter and flowers, you can really make your pieces pop.

Candles

Candles can be bought almost anywhere, so it’s important to make yours unique. Consider a fancy candle holder for your candle creations, colored wax or a unique scent name. Some candles sold on Etsy have crystals or dried flowers on the surface that allow them to stand out from the traditional ones.

When working with candle scents, try experimenting with essential oils to find what scents blend together well. Fragrance oils are good to make the candle scent stronger, but be careful not to make it too overpowering.

When making your own candles, remember the wick. The candle wick should be placed in the container before the wax. Keep the wick centered by using a laundry clip to hold it in place.

TikTok for exposure

TikTok has become an increasingly popular app. Small business owners can gain exposure for their products by posting content and packaging videos.

Even if you already have a TikTok account, make a separate one just for your business. Use a separate email, but once you create a different account, go into your profile and click on the three dots in the top right corner. Then, go to manage accounts and switch to pro accounts. Select business, and now you have a new account set up.

Even if you’re not interested in using TikTok as a marketing tool, social media is a great way to share your ideas and techniques with your crafts.

While self-promoting helps, startup companies are not easy, and they take time. Do not get discouraged if no one buys right away, sometimes it just takes a little time for your business to form and grow.
